It is a pain and I only have 12 users. After I found a permission list that worked for a specific department, I created a uers name like AP or Purchasing, etc. and then copied the permissions to that generic name. Then when I have a new person for that department, I copy the permissions to the new user.

Andrew, you read my mind. I had actually wrote that in my notes, and then neglected to include it in the blog post. Mark, I would also like you to explain the last half of your comment as well.

As Andrew mentioned the temporary permission changes bite and as you’ve noted the maintenance on the sister screens in addition to the parent screens is just adding insult to injury. The lack of AD interface might be easier to tolerate if a date stamp permissions queue were created in addition to making a dynamic dependency prompt on parent screens.

You forgot the worst problem of all. If Sally from Sales has to be the back up for Peter in Purchasing, you cant add his rights to hers. She can either have hers or his, but not both. You have to figure out the differences and add them one at a time.

No arguments from me, I agree that the permissions within M2M are tedious, at best. And while they may work, it seems that it is time to consider updating the schema to work with at least, Active Directory. That would allow a little better control and ease of management.

Good blog, David - you have presented the correct information very well.
